What Mendix can do for you
Mendix is a low-code application development platform — an approach to app development that reduces the need to manually write code by hand. With low-code development, both professionals and non-technical users can build applications more efficiently, enabling businesses to rapidly develop, deploy, and manage their apps.
The Mendix platform supports low-code app development through the following features:
- Cross-platform application development – With Mendix, users can build native mobile apps, progressive web apps (PWAs), web-based portals and more, ensuring a consistent user experience across all platforms.
- Integrated development environment – Mendix’s powerful IDE includes Git-based version control as well as automated testing and debugging, ensuring high-quality applications and efficient project management.
- AI-assisted development – The platform incorporates AI to assist in the development process, providing smart recommendations and automating repetitive tasks.
- Extensibility and integration – Mendix is highly extensible, seamlessly integrating with third-party tools. Users can create reusable modules written in Java and JavaScript, and use the Mendix Machine Learning Kit to easily build ML capabilities into workflows.
- Data management – The platform provides data monitoring and management tools that enable secure access and sharing, protecting your business's sensitive information while ensuring compliance with various regulatory standards.
Low-code platforms like Mendix bring numerous benefits. For starters, the gap between business and IT is lessened — it’s easier for non-technical stakeholders to collaborate with developers, leading to more purpose-ready solutions and faster project completion.
With Mendix, it’s easy to modernize legacy systems and automate business processes, improving operational efficiency and creating a solid foundation for the future. Companies can leverage the latest technologies — which they’d otherwise lack the technical expertise to deploy — such as machine learning and IoT.
What’s more, applications built with Mendix are cloud-native, containerized and portable. As a result, they scale effortlessly with your business needs. The ultimate result is faster development, rapid innovation and increased efficiency, leading to a competitive edge in the market.
Mendix pricing structures and tiers
Mendix pricing is highly flexible, ranging from a free tier up to bespoke enterprise-grade plans. There are two prices for each tier depending on how many apps you want to create — One App or Unlimited Apps. The former offers a lower entrypoint to the Mendix platform, while the latter is better-suited to organizations that have identified a larger portfolio for development.
Costs are primarily billed per user per app per month — with a user counting as an individual with access to your applications. There’s no charge for anonymous users accessing applications on the Mendix platform, or for developers creating apps. Here’s a breakdown of what you get with each Mendix pricing tier.
Mendix pricing – Free
- One App pricing: $0
- Unlimited Apps pricing: $0
The Mendix free tier is an excellent way to get started with the platform and test it out.
Users have access to the Mendix IDE for agile low-code app development. Apps can be deployed in Mendix Cloud — a multi-tenant public cloud built on Cloud Foundry and AWS — but will only run for a couple of hours before shutting down, and cannot be scaled.
Apps are limited to two environments each — one for local development and one for production on Mendix Cloud.
Free users can develop their skills with the Mendix online academy and receive help from the Mendix community. However, there’s no customer support or uptime guarantee with this plan.
Mendix pricing – Basic
- One App pricing: $10.50/month per user per app (min. five users)
- Unlimited Apps pricing: plan not available
Basic Mendix pricing is the cheapest way to get a licensed node to run your application without limitations. All other features are nearly identical to the free plan, with the addition of customer support from 9am to 5pm and a 99.5% uptime SLA.
With a five-seat minimum, Basic pricing starts at $52.50 per month per app. This plan is ideal if you want to create simple applications like automating a spreadsheet.
Mendix pricing – Standard
- One App pricing: $900/month plus $10.50/month per user per app
- Unlimited Apps pricing: $2,100/month plus $10.50/month per user per app
The Standard plan adds dashboards for project management and operations activity, while applications can be scaled vertically to add more compute power. There are more deployment options available as add-on costs too, such as private cloud or SAP BTP, and support for up to four environments per app.
This plan is suitable for the majority of business applications, including all the key features of the Mendix platform. Customers on Standard can also connect an identity provider (IDP) for user authentication and receive access to a dedicated success manager.
Mendix pricing – Premium
- One App pricing: contact for quote
- Unlimited Apps pricing: contact for quote
Premium Mendix pricing is aimed at the enterprise level, providing vertical and horizontal scaling, high availability, fallback, and flexible deployment for mission-critical applications. These plans are provided on a custom quote basis.
Additional functionality includes a private marketplace where companies can share apps and components internally, more flexible environment options, and advanced control of Mendix infrastructure.
Support is available 24/7 and the uptime SLA is increased to 99.95%.
Additional Mendix costs to consider
Some features of Mendix come at an additional cost on top of your base plan. The following add-ons are only available for Standard and Premium customers.
Cloud deployment
Receive custom pricing for a public or private Mendix Cloud deployment, or opt to run your applications on a private cloud, AWS GovCloud with FedRAMP compliance, SAP Business Technology Platform, or on-prem.
Scalability
Increase the capacity of your Mendix applications by adding additional nodes to your environment (horizontal scaling), or increase the computing power of existing nodes (vertical scaling).
High availability and fallback
Get guaranteed uptime availability for mission-critical or core applications in your business.
Multi-region failover
Automatically switch to a different AWS region in the event of a failure of your primary region.
Other vendors offering low-code app development
A variety of vendors provide low-code application development platforms, and it’s worth considering alternatives to Mendix during your procurement cycle. Here are three popular choices and how they compare.
Mendix pricing vs OutSystems
OutSystems is a low-code platform known for its extensive functionality and scalability, making it suitable for various business sizes. The solution offers pre-built templates and components, strong mobile development capabilities, and comprehensive support for complex enterprise applications. Mendix, while similar in capabilities, emphasizes ease of use and rapid development, making it a strong competitor in terms of speed and agility.
OutSystems pricing is more complex than Mendix. Although it offers a free tier, this is only for testing applications and not for production use. The paid plan starts at $3,025 a month (billed annually) for 100 internal users, but the cost is affected by the scale and complexity of apps you create.
Mendix pricing vs AppSheet
AppSheet, now part of Google Cloud, is ideal for SMBs and startups due to its simplicity and integration with Google Workspace. The solution focuses on empowering non-technical users to create apps quickly without any coding, handling smaller projects efficiently and cost-effectively where Mendix’s powerful features may be overkill.
Pricing for AppSheet is highly accessible, starting at $5 per user per month for the Starter plan. The Core plan is included with many Google Workspace plans but otherwise costs $10 per user per month, while Enterprise Plus is available from $20 per user per month.
Mendix pricing vs Appian
Appian’s low-code automation platform leans more towards streamlining business processes and enhancing operational efficiency. Compared to Mendix, Appian offers sophisticated tools for process automation and case management, making it ideal for industries requiring complex workflows.
Appian pricing is available in three tiers. Specific pricing isn’t disclosed, but it can be costly and is best suited to large enterprises. In comparison, Mendix provides a lower-cost alternative for a more diverse set of use cases.
Mendix pricing – the Vertice verdict
